El jaguar se encuentra en la categoría de "casi amenazado" en la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN).
En México está catalogado como especie en peligro de extinción y su caza está prohibida desde 1987. La Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (Conanp) lo considera un felino cuya conservación es prioritaria.
El jaguar vive cercado debido a la destrucción de su hábitat, la caza ilegal y el continuo conflicto jaguar-humano como resultado de las crecientes actividades en su entorno.
